On Saturday August 9th, we (along with Coastal Truck & Equipment) decided to try our hand again at BIR. After all we were still riding the waves from our fifth place finish. It was a nice day in Birmingham, low humidity, and breezy it was perfect conditions to be at the track.
We went out for the first practice, just to feel the car out, make sure everything was in race condition, when we noticed that the car was smoking as it made each circuit around the 5/8 mile oval. Upon inspecting the car, we noticed that the valve cover was leaking oil, one problem; no valve cover gasket.
We had some friends on their way to the track so Roger made a phone call and just like that we had one on the way. Unfortunately we had to miss the rest of practice, however by this time we were able to make the needed repairs to the Coastal Truck & Equipment car. Now it was time to qualify. I believe that their were fifteen cars there that night and we qualified tenth. On the sixth lap going into turn three a huge cloud of smoke erupted out of the back of the car sending it spinning into the outside wall. Oil was everywhere but luckily we did not loose the engine, just a malfunction.
We will now be sending the engine off to our engine builder for repair, however it looks like we will miss the next race scheduled for August 22.
There was some good news that came out of this night, we entered Jerry Bradford's Limited Sportsman car and won that race. So far this year they have ran this class seven times, we have entered six times, coming away with six wins.
